BIOGRAPHY Maria de Medeiros was born on August 19, 1965, in Lisbon, Portugal. After graduating from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Paris, she devoted herself to theatre and cinema, first as an actress, before broadening her work to script writing and directing short and feature films. Since her first role in Joao Cesar Monteiro¿s Silvestre (1982), Maria de Medeiros has starred in over 30 feature movies in Portugal, Spain, France and the United States. In 1994, she was awarded Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Teresa Villarde¿s Três Irmãos. In 1995, her performance in Joaquim Leito¿s Adao e Eva won her the Portuguese Golden Globe Award. In 2000, she directed Capitaes de Abril, which was presented in the official selection of Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival.
