Inaugurated in Cannes 2007 to help developing countries preserve their film heritage, the World Cinema Foundation, presided by Martin Scorsese, presents three films supported by advisor-filmmakers:
GU LING JIE SHAO NIAN SHA REN SHI JIAN (A Brighter Summer Day) by Edward Yang (1991, 237’ Taiwan), uncut version.
AL-MOMIA (La Momie) by Shadi Abdel Salam (1969, 103’ Egypt)
REDES (The Wave) by Emilio Gomez Muriel and Fred Zinnemann (1936, 61’ Mexico)
The World Cinema Foundation has also helped the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, which will be presenting BILDER FRAN LEKSTUGAN (Jeux de tournage) (29' Sweden). Directed by Stig Björkman, this unseen footage from Ingmar Bergman's pictures was shot by him during the making of his films.
"The World Cinema Foundation is a natural expansion of my love for movies It has created a base upon which we can build. There is now, I believe, a film preservation consciousness. The World Cinema Foundation is a non-profit organisation created to help developing countries preserve their cinematic treasures. We want to help strengthen and support the work of international archives, and provide a resource for those countries lacking the archival and technical facilities to do the work themselves". Martin Scorsese
