IL GATTOPARDO (The Leopard)
Synopsis
When Giuseppe Garibaldi disembarked in Sicily, the family of Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, settles in his country mansion in Donnafugata. During the trip, Tancredi, the Prince’s favorite nephew, courts his cousin Concetta just for the sake of it. The girl asks father Perrone, priest of Donnafugata and spiritual counselor of the whole family, to inquire her father whether she could marry Tancredi. However, the Prinece refuses to give his consent. Moreover, Tancredi is in love with Angelica, the daughter of Donnafugata’s Mayor. Against his will, the Prince accepts the circumstances and at the elections his vote goes in favor of the Unity of Italy and against the Bourbon princes. Tancredi leaves to join his regiment and he writes his uncle to ask for Angelica Sedara’s hand. The Prince meets Calogero Sedara, the girl’s father, a very wealthy bourgeois, as rich as Fabrizio Salina. Shortly after, Tancredi comes back and he spends some days with his loved one, who he will marry soon. The Prince is offered a seat in the Senate of the newly born government, but he refuses claiming that: he belongs to an unlucky generation, halfway between the old and the new eras, and that consequently he would not feel at ease there. The Prince throws a grand ball for all Sicilian aristocracy on the occasion of Angelica’s debut. Angelica and Fabrizio Salina are admired by all guests. After the ball the Prince feels as if he were an intruder, and when his old passions arouse at the sight of his future niece, he suddenly leaves the engaged couple. While he wanders around his palace, he hears that four deserters of Vittorio Emanuele’s army have tried to join Garibaldi, and that they will be executed. At the end of the ball he walks towards to see... Four shots break the silence. Then, all ends. The dying aristocracy witnesses the death of the ideals of liberty.Press kit download (PDF)
